 What is a Military Tattoo?

Traditions are a part of every individual, group and community -- including the military. A tattoo is a traditional outdoor military exercise given by troops as evening entertainment. The word 'tattoo' comes from the closing-time cry in the inns of the Low Countries during the 17th and 18th centuries - Doe den tap toe ('turn off the taps').

The most famous tattoo is the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland. This Tattoo celebrates over 50 years of music and spectacle set against the world famous backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. It attracks an annual audience of 217,000, augmented by a television audience of 100 million.

The USFAA began honoring field artillerymen with a musical tattoo in 1984 with the musical program written by Fort Sill's 77th Army Band. Experience a Virginia International Military Tattoo through the eyes of Dr. Ellen.
