A Sudden Freeze

Winter in Williamsburg, Virginia is not a consistent season. Sometimes we get a little snow, sometimes we don't. Occasionally we get quite a lot of it!

When these images were taken we were having a mild, snowless winter with temperate days that allowed local gardens to stay in bloom well beyond their normal growth period. One Friday afternoon I happened to be driving across the College of William & Mary campus and noticed a lovely garden of blooms. They were remarkable for their lateness in the season.

Later that night it rained hard, and then the temperature plummeted.

Mindful of those blossoms, I gathered up my camera equipment for a early morning foray into the College gardens -- hopeful that I would find those blossoms encased in ice. And so I did! It is not often that you see Virginia flora so wonderfully wrapped.
