These pages are devoted to the American Black Bear. On these pages you will find educational links, hiker and homeowner safety information, black bear articles, as well as biological data about black bear habitat and physical characteristics and behavior. You will find out that black bears are timid and easily frightened, reclusive, mostly solitary, and inherently non-confrontational. They are not dangerous and unpredictable. They also do not growl and show their teeth in aggressive displays. And they are not ferociously protective of their cubs like the grizzly bear is. In fact, the black bear is nothing like the grizzly and we need to stop demonizing this interesting animal and replace our ingrained fears with understanding. To date, black bears have lost more than 60% of their historical range in North America and you and I stand in the way, or not, of its ultimate survival. *Click to open the black bear directory |
