College of William & Mary

Chartered in 1693 by King William III and Queen Mary II, this residential state university of national character is one of Williamsburg's local treasures. Originally the College was chartered to train young men and clergy for the Church of England but it severed formal ties with Britan in 1776; it became state supported in 1906 and it became coeducational in 1918. Phi Beta Kappa and the Honor Code system of conduct were founded at William & Mary.

The Sir Christopher Wren Building is the oldest academic building in the U.S. and is one of W&M's most visited landmarks.Click here to learn more about the College of W&M
