The Rainbow River Watershed
~A Conservation Debacle~

Rainbow River Ranch II
in August 2006

These images show how the Rainbow River Ranch and property on both sides of it looked before development and subsequent clearing began.

Note the rich old-growth coastal understory which is critical habitat for a wide range of Florida's indiginous species of flora and fauna. Cattle ranches and rolling farmland, as well, are falling prey to the insatiable thirst of those who would turn nature into gold. This cannot continue for long before our wildlife and our wild places will be gone.

The small City Council of Dunnellon earlier had approved the developer's request to prepare 260 acres for a new residential community that would include a commercial center, clubhouse, docks, as well as a storage area for boats and recreational vehicles.

The beautiful Rainbow River, which is designated as an Outstanding Florida Waterway, is a spring-fed river that flows 5.7 miles to the Withlacoochee River. Damage to this river will subsequently impact the Withlacoochee as well.
