Yorktown Onion

A Yorktown Onion (Allium ampeloprasum) with Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus) found along on the Colonial Parkway near Yorktown, Virginia. Allium is latin for garlic, while alpeloprasum means "leek of the vineyard". Legend has it that the seeds came here from the Old World during the Revolutionary War mixed with crop seeds or fodder. It became firmly established as a wild plant in what is now York County and is protected by law. They bloom only for a few days once a year in early July and can ONLY be found within and around Yorktown.
